Angelo Badalamenti also wrote many songs using the pseudonym Andy Badale, and even recorded an LP as Andy Badale and the Beer Garden Band. An instrumental he wrote (with Morty Wax credited as co-writer; hard to know whether Wax contributed or merely added his name to this to get some copyright royalties), "Escapade," was the last track on The Wynton Kelly Trio Verve LP "It's All Right." Badale's other songs were recorded by vocalists including Nina Simone, Della Reese, Nancy Wilson, Melba Moore, and many more

David Music, Inc., filed the Copyright on Escapade. Morty Wax owned this publishing company. It was very common for publishers and/or label owners to add their name to Copyright filings in the 1950s/1960s. It makes me think that Wax did not contribute to this composition. Badale / Badalamenti never filed a Copyright renewal on Escapade.

Nice tribute to a great director. Good to see the reference to Alan Splet his sound work (with Lynch) on “eraserhead”, “elephant man “and “ blue velvet” is extraordinary. I also wonder if Eraserhead would have been as brilliant without Jack Nance’s perfectly judged performance

Back in 1986 I was hired to play piano in Prague’ s FISYO ( Film Symphony Orchestra) for the film called Blue Velvet. Conductor was Maestro Dr. Štěpán Koníček, who is credited on more then 160 film scores. Dr. Koníček English speaking’s wasn’t that well as his fluent German, so after while I became an unofficial translator.

Supraphon company delegated a girl translator, but she wasn’t good enough on musical terms.

Badalamenti orchestral score wasn’t transposed, so it created confusions with French horn players and others.

At the scene (about 15 min into film) where Laura Dern arrives with convertible in front of building where Isabela Roselini stays, David Lynch didn’t like the music.

Strings were removed, horns removed. David Lynch still didn’t like it. Then he asked piano trio to play something else.

Well, I do have about 40 seconds of my trio music in the movie, played by Robert Balzar bass, Ivan Smažík drums and me.

At the time we had no idea who David Lynch was.

Years later I’ve seen Blue Velvet in Prague theater and was whispering to my wife, that’s me playing piano. She said shut up and watch it.

Still reckoning with the immense gifts Lynch left this world, how much some of them have shaped my own aesthetic perceptions and meant for so many people. And still so many to be discovered.

Just wanted to mention today the footage of Lynch and Badalamenti in Prague recording the string music for the Lost Highway soundtrack (thank you, you tube) as priceless. Also the HBO series “Hotel Room” (3 episodes pre- Twin Peaks) (again, you Tube) is quite a find. This “news” about that Wynton Kelly track is amazing. Also remembered today some of the great Jazz Musicians on the TP soundtrack are Grady Tate and Eddie Daniels.
