It doesn't get a whole lot of notice, but the soundtrack to They Call Me Mr Tibbs is fire. Absolutely cracking band. Billy Preston cuts sick on Hammond. And, it seems, only ever released on vinyl.

It's also fun to play in Toshi Clinch's arrangement; it sorts out the feelers from the mere readers.

I like Peggy Lee’s album “Blues Cross Country” which was recorded with an excellent big band with arrangements by Quincy. He also conducted the band. Among many others the band included Benny Carter, Buddy Collette, and Jimmy Rowles. Good Peggy Lee is very good indeed!

Did he commission ghostwriters who were given a sense of direction ?

The one indication that Q was human instead of a god was his score for The Pawnbroker. It wasn't really his fault, it was whoever thought of putting a great jazz writer on such a project (although...**). This is one of the most searing, devastating, heart-wrenching dramas of all time, one of the greatest performances of Rod Steiger, and here comes this hipster jazz score, it couldn't have been less appropriate, given the subject. **No reason jazz couldn't have been used to score a devastating drama, but Q didn't come close for some reason. This is how we know he didn't actually descend from Mt. Olympus, because everything else he ever did was sensational.
