Holy cow, the fact that the reverb was *in the headphones* during recording explains so much! That "ECM restraint" everyone seems to adopt on those records makes so much more sense now.
Such memories! These were recordings I discovered while in grad school -- was also writing for The $ensible Sound, an audio magazine, raising kids; life was jam-packed. At one point in my life and his, my wife thought Bill Frisell and I could have passed for brothers. Another recording around this same time was Power Tools, with Frisell and Ronald Shannon Jackson on droms as I recall -- was it Melvin Gibbs on bass? I'm sure someone will correct me. Peter Erskine is not only a dynamite drummer, but also a fine photographer and superb storyteller. My sincere thanks to all involved in bringing us this insightful tale!
