Great recommendation! Have you heard Patrick Bartley's new alto trio record (First Song)? Not a standards album but it's quite good.

I’m reminded by the record title that the great soprano/clarinet player Jane Ira Bloom did a gorgeous take on “For All We Know” not too long ago. Lovely songs deserve lovely treatments. I’m looking forward to copping Jim’s record. Thanks Ethan for your typically insightful review.

I wouldn't have checked this album out if you hadn't written about it. I remember liking a Jim Snidero record at the end of the 80s. This is really strong. Surely some kind of bass master class from Peter Washington, who has so much room to himself. Plus everything you pointed out.

As usual, you are spot on…the Snidero album is excellent! Peter Washington is usually really fine, and this work is a clinic in support and creativity. Thank you for this review!

If all record reviews had this level of concise, accurate detail, I’d read more. Excellent job, and I’ll be jumping into Snidero. Thanks!

I'm just now reading this in connection with your more recent Jim Snidero review. Who else would you consider to be an "intervallic alto?"

Reading this makes this non-musician wish he had a better grasp of music theory. I'm considering a course at my local community college, but if anyone knows of YouTube, books, or other resources that are suited to non-musicians I'd be grateful to learn what they are. BTW I saw Snidero on tour in support of this release and he was great.

ornette had a great alto trio in the 60s (of course, they didn't play standards). air was an iconic alto trio in 70s/80s, but they didn't play standatds either. henderson didn't really trio until after the 60s; trane only trio-ed when mccoy laid out.

but your general point re tenor vs alto holds and i never really had thought about it. looking forward to checking out snidero

Good point about Joe Henderson, his standards trio was later, although there's "Foresight and Afterthought" with Ron and Jack, which is one of my favorite things, it's from the 60's, it's free but I guess there's something about it that says to me, "This is someone who is gonna play trio." Coltrane "I Love You" and "Chasing the Trane" are two of my other trio favs.
