TT 344: Who Are You, Really?
(Dexter Gordon quote and 2nd single from upcoming Blue Note record)
The next track from Technically Acceptable is out today, my tune “Who Are You, Really?”
“Who Are You, Really?” is on all the streaming services including YouTube. With Thomas Morgan and Kush Abadey, who are also joining me at the Village Vanguard the week of January 23-28.
The title is a direct lift from the DTM interview with Jed Eisenman, the GM of the Village Vanguard. Dexter Gordon asks Jed, “Who are you? Who are you, really?”
Nice! I don't know what the pedigree of the style is, but I really like these tunes that are full of clean triads without jazz sevenths sprinkled everywhere. They give the harmony a nice crystalline quality that's a good background for the madness to come. Did m. 3 change from E7 to G#dim7 (similar function of course) some time between writing and playing? I like it; the F natural gives a hint of the upcoming G-C.
