Fascinating story. I wonder if other readers here close to my age (60) have an unofficial mental category called "albums I had on vinyl but never got on digital either because they were obscure and unavailable or just weren't at the top of my list." I had a bunch of Jones/Lewis Big Band albums roughly in that category. I remember well the playing of Jerry Dodgion and Dick Oatts and one of these days I'll search out what I can get digitally.

Great essay. Thanks! The cover of The Magnificent Thad Jones captured my teenage imagination and compelled purchase even though I hadn’t heard of him. Didn’t disappoint and is still on my shelf! And the Solid State Village Vanguard album made mandatory my first pilgrimage to the club on a Monday night in late 1969. Or maybe it was early 1970 (advancing age, bruh....)
