A nice surprise awaited me the other morning when finishing up the latest Bernie book by Lawrence Block, The Burglar Who Met Fredric Brown. Good grief, I think I attained nirvana for a few moments there. Thanks Larry!
Colonial north America brought slaves primarily from west rather than central Africa . West Africa has a lot of string ( Ngoni ) ensemble band music . Listen and see if you think Ngoni bands originated swing ? Before Louis Armstrong the NE USA had lots of Black string ensembles . NE band musicians picked up on Louis very quickly . Did they just choose to adapt familiar string band practice ? Also , European harmony comes heavily from string instruments adapted for East Indian music theory . Some trade routes to Europe from East India run through the African Sahara . West Africa as well as Europe had East Indian trade . Does this connection have meaning for this discussion ?

I'm sure it all connects. That's why I hedged in my comment. Thanks for your insight!
