Last night I was at the American Composers Orchestra gala. Among other memorable moments, Joan Tower gave an impromptu speech. Tower said the first time the ACO commissioned her was 1980, when, "There was Uptown: Schoenberg. Midtown: Copland. Downtown: John Cage." (A reminder of ancient battles...)
