Tomorrow, September 27, is the Bud Powell Centenary. I’ve uploaded a YouTube scrolling score video of three of his most famous improvisations.
On February 23, 1949, Bud Powell was released from Creedmoor State Hospital for a day in order to record six sides with Ray Brown and Max Roach for producer Norman Granz.
Since the mid-‘50s, the LP and CD issue Jazz Giant has led off with “Tempus Fugit,” “Celia,” and “Cherokee.” The piano improvisations on all three offer peak Powell in the studio. All of Powell’s many followers have listened carefully to these performances.
“Tempus Fugit” is dark and stormy
“Celia” is relaxed and lyrical
“Cherokee” is brilliant and brainy
Like most jazz transcriptions, these pages are not accurate, but merely a starting point for study and debate.
