On Monday I’m going to take an August break from the socials and Substack. Until then, I’m opening up the comments section on this post for all readers (usually it is for paid subscribers only). Say what is on your mind, or ask me anything (but please keep it clean and civil).
I’m open to suggestions of what to write about in the fall (no promises.) At the moment I am working on two pieces, about Louis Armstrong and the new Louis Armstrong Center in Queens, and about Bobby Timmons. I also keep meaning to share the specific Cramer etudes that Beethoven taught his students.
UPDATE: I closed comments. That was really fun, I got something like 50 interesting questions. Check back around the top of every month for another “ask me anything.”
Hi Ethan. Your writing is golden. When can we expect a full length book from you? Soon I hope.
Hi Ethan, do you know the app metronomics (https://metronomicsapp.com)?
Any thoughts on that please? It´s a vast topic I know, but how do you see complex grooves that can be written sometimes even before one can play them?
Do you feel music by people like Steve Coleman, Matt Mitchel, etc are too intelectual, or not really because when it comes to groove and swing you just have to feel it in you (as a listener) ?
Thanks a lot and all the best!
