How wonderfully fresh to bring together the minds of Johnson, Iverson and Morris! Thank you for bringing us this music and your unique collaboration will have us all dancing the Charleston, naturally in 5/4 time!
Josef Hofmann (and Liszt)>JPJ>Duke>Monk. And now EI moving it forward. Do your readers have any idea how technically difficult 'Modernistic' must be to play? Hope to someday deep dive JPJ's symphonic work. Until then, see and hear ya at the Joyce tonight...
Tackling JPJ symphonic work in a 21st century manner is an interesting idea. The original melodic ideas are strong, but the work(s) probably needs a collaborator unafraid of ruthlessly infusing the material with something asymmetrical. See you tonight, Tony!
Love this! Just yesterday I was gathering some stuff concerning James P for a Jazz History class I’m teaching this semester. What you say totally resonates with me. I do have to check out your previous articles on the subject which I missed. I will look forward to your Johnson piano scores when they come out!
I know both, of course. The roll is hyper-organized with overdubs: a studio production. Wish he had tracked a casual solo piano reading!! The Bechet is only a B IMHO. In fact I can barely think any really jazz good records of "The Charleston." Indeed, I can't think of a single good solo piano record of that famous song! There must be one somewhere though.
